The Floor Beneath the Herd: Why She Chooses Rubber

A cow knows what her feet feel underneath her. Given the choice, she walks off cold, hard concrete and onto rubber every time, and the longer she has that choice, the more she takes it. She is not making a point. She is choosing the surface that is easier on her, and she would tell you so herself if she could.

Cows already struggling with sore feet feel the difference most. On rubber, the ones with the sorest feet took longer, steadier strides and put more confident weight down. Healthy cows improved too, but nowhere near as much. Rubber flooring does the most good exactly where it is needed most.

This is not a one-off. Herd after herd shows the same pattern: barns with rubber in the walking areas see less lameness, less slipping and less pressure on the claw than barns with bare concrete.

There is an honest caveat too. Flooring on its own is not the whole story. Barns that pair a rubber alley with a comfortable stall base do best of all, better than rubber alone. Cows also heal faster from knocks and grazes wherever they have a soft, comfortable place to lie down, whatever the alley floor is made of. The floor matters, but so does everywhere else a cow rests.

Taken together, this is not a coincidence. Cows feel the difference underfoot, the reason why holds up, and the animals with the most to gain tend to gain the most, as long as there is enough rubber to go round.
